Shakila Dada (PhD) is a Professor at the Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (CAAC) at the University of Pretoria. She is currently the Director of the CAAC. She completed her Masters and PhD (AAC) at the University of Pretoria and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Mälardalen University, in Sweden. She is a speech language therapist with extensive experience in research and teaching in the field of AAC and Early Childhood Intervention (ECI). Her research seeks to systemically describe, understand and address the communication and participation patterns of persons who have complex communication needs. Her particular focus is on the way in which graphic symbol-based augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems can be used to facilitate language learning for individuals with complex communication needs and also facilitate their participation in society.
