Elena Cherneva-Markova graduated with a Master’s degree in “Law” at the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. Her entire professional path is related to the protection of human rights.
Since 1981, she has been working as a lawyer, a member of the Sofia Bar Association. She has many years of experience in the field of civil, administrative, commercial and labor law.
From 2012 to 2020, She was the chairman of the National Legal Aid Bureau in the Republic of Bulgaria. She worked actively to improve the provision of legal aid to vulnerable socially weak citizens for the protection of their rights and interests.
She has many years of experience in leading a number of projects dedicated to the protection of human rights and improving the capacity of the National Bureau of Legal Aid.
In 2017 she associates the National Bureau of Legal Aid as a partner of the Council of Europe in the international project “Juststorm”, with the main activity – protection of the rights of socially weak women and children from domestic violence.
On July 22, 2020, she was elected by the National Assembly as the deputy ombudsman of the Republic of Bulgaria, as a proposal for her candidacy was made by the Union of Lawyers in the Republic of Bulgaria and other non-governmental organizations working to protect the rights and freedoms of citizens.
